Purple Dead-Nettle

Purple dead-nettle, Lamium purpureum,  is a very close relative of henbit, Lamium amplexicaule.

Purple dead-nettle has leaves tinted reddish brown, and paler flowers than henbit. The shape of the flowers is almost identical.

Like all mint relatives the flower is made up of 5 very irregular petals, two make up the hood on top, and three make up the sides and "tongue".

In the photo above you can clearly see the square stem so typical of all mints.
